5 things you should look for in a mattress

If you’re considering buying a new mattress that’s for two average sized adults who will sleep on it every night of the week, look for the following to make sure you get a mattress that will last you several years:

For two adults, ideally you should aim for king or super king size mattress, space permitting

A daily-use mattress with a full-sized pocket spring core, and a spring count of 1,000 or more

Mattress+Depth

A daily-use mattress should be at least 25cm deep

anything less than this is generally a less robust mattress for those that are very young, very light or only sleep in it two or three times a week

Look to spend around £300 or more for a king sized mattress; ignore any ridiculous sale messages – if something is selling at 50% off, then more than likely the half price is it’s true selling price

anything less usually equates to a mattress less likely to last 6 to 7 years

The mattress should include a minimum warranty of 5 years or more

Of course, your budget may force some compromises, but a mattress as close to these listed features should last 6 to 7 years, rather than having to spend more money to replace your mattress more often.

Some other tips:

Read customer reviews

  • Keep an open mind, as these are extremely subjective from people of different shapes, sizes, preferences and habits.

Take awards and expert reviews with a pinch of salt (or even ignore them)

  • For example, Which? Consumer magazine awarded the exact same Best Buy award to a

£169 15cm deep foam mattress that is probably only fit for kids, guest rooms or occasional use,

    a £700 30cm deep 1,800 spring hybrid mattress,

    and a £1,400 22cm deep full latex no-spring mattress

  • Most consumer magazines and “expert” review websites are commission-driven businesses that do not have the true expertise or impartiality to make recommendations - especially when it’s a product that could affect your sleep, and in turn, your health.

Quick Google search

  • Once you know what mattress you want, Google search the name of the mattress to ensure you’re getting the best deal and also to read customer reviews from other retailers
